This is an extraordinary time for leadership and education
Around two centuries ago, modern mass schooling took shape, first in Prussia and then across Europe and the English-speaking world. It was designed to build disciplined, loyal citizens, and it grew up alongside the industrial age, sharing its love of efficiency, standardisation and order.
A century later, our organisations were designed on the same principles. Scientific management and the assembly line divided work into small, repeatable tasks, timed every movement, and placed decisions at the top of a hierarchy.
Schools and workplaces came to mirror each other. Bells and shifts, grades and ranks, standard lessons and standard tasks: each prepared people for the other. For a long time, that design served its world well.
A new world has arrived. Our technologies, cultures, organisations and ways of living are evolving at extraordinary speed, and we now create the future as we move toward it.
This moment calls for a deeper kind of learning and leading, one that grows our capacity to: meet uncertainty with curiosity; move through change with adaptability; create with imagination; relate with love; and contribute with purpose.
